Marijuana charge against Notre Dame QB dismissed
A misdemeanor drug-possession charge against Notre Dame quarterback Demetrius Jones was dropped after prosecutors determined the marijuana did not belong to the former Morgan Park standout.
Jones was arrested May 17 following a traffic stop on the Indiana Toll Road. He was driving from Chicago to South Bend, Ind. A police officer pulled over the Dodge Charger Jones was driving after trash was thrown from the window. During the course of the stop, the officer uncovered less than 30 grams of marijuana in the ashtray, according to the police report. Jones, who was with two passengers, was then taken to LaPorte County Jail and later released.
A document released by the prosecutor’s office in LaPorte County Thursday stated that the case would be dismissed because the registered owner of the Charger said Jones didn’t know the marijuana was in the ashtray. The owner signed an affidavit Tuesday saying the marijuana belonged to him, not Jones.
Jones could not be reached for comment Thursday. University official Don Wycliff said it is against university policy to comment on the case, but Wycliff confirmed that Jones remains enrolled as a student and is in good standing.
Jones, a graduate of Morgan Park, is vying for the starting quarterback spot vacated by Brady Quinn. Irish coach Charlie Weis is expected to name the two candidates for that role next week, and Jones and Jimmy Clausen are the top candidates out of four contenders.
