Kentucky signee facing felony charge
A Kentucky football signee is facing a felony burglary charge after allegedly breaking into the home of a former basketball coach and stealing eight guns on May 21.
Duran Jefferson, 19, was arrested last week along with a 17-year-old high school student. Jefferson, from Holmes High School in Covington, Ky., signed with Kentucky in February.
Jefferson was supposed to attend his high school graduation last Friday night but instead was held on a $20,000 bond at the Kenton County Detention Court. Jefferson has pleaded not guilty.
Lt. Col. Spike Jones of the Covington Police Department said Jefferson is involved in another incident still under investigation and that details of that incident would not be released until police have more information.
Jefferson was an honorable mention All-State selection in football. Kentucky had planned on looking at him as both a receiver and a defensive back.
"We're very concerned and are monitoring the situation closely," Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said in a statement. "His status will be under review as the facts are determined."
Dooley Faces Radiation: The tumor removed from the throat of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley is malignant, but his prognosis is considered excellent.
Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton said the 74-yeaar-old Dooley learned the results Wednesday and will have radiation treatments in June. Dooley had surgery May 22 in Atlanta to remove a tumor near his vocal cords.
Felton said Dooley is making visits as usual to his office on campus and even attended a speaking engagement, though he couldn't speak.
Dooley had been experiencing some hoarseness for several months before an examination revealed the tumor, according to his wife, Barbara Dooley.
Dooley worked at the university for 41 years as football coach and athletic director and retired in 2004.
Notre Dame QB Job: The competition to replace Brady Quinn as Notre Dame's starting quarterback was narrowed to three instead of the two coach Charlie Weis wanted.
Evan Sharpley, Jimmy Clausen and Demetrius Jones will vie for the job, Weis said. That left sophomore Zach Frazer out of the running.
