Michigan QB Henne out vs. Notre Dame
ANN ARBOR, Michigan (Ticker) -- It just keeps getting worse for Michigan.
The sliding Wolverines, who opened the season with two straight losses, now will be without injured senior quarterback Chad Henne against Notre Dame this Saturday.
Michigan coach Lloyd Carr did not give the specifics of Henne's injury but said that he expects the veteran signal-caller to return this season.
"I talked to (Henne) yesterday. He's in good spirits but disappointed," Carr said. "He'll come back quicker than most."
Until then, freshman Ryan Mallett, who was 6-of-17 with an interception in the second half of Saturday's 39-7 loss to Oregon, will start.
"He's not intimidated by anything. That's one of the things I like about him. He's got a lot of confidence," Carr said. "He's got a great arm, and yet he's got to go into this week and play with them himself and within the context of the game plan, because it's really about winning. And it's not about Ryan Mallett. It's about doing the things that will help this team win."
Henne appeared to injury his knee after taking a big hit from Ducks defensive end Jeremy Gibbs in the second quarter.
The bad news seems to be piling up for the Wolverines, who began the season with a shocking loss to Appalachian State of the Football Championship Subdivision.
Michigan will host Notre Dame on Saturday in a matchup of perennial powers, who are 0-2 in the same season for the first time in history. The Fighting Irish also will start a freshman - heralded quarterback Jimmy Clausen.
