Jimmy Clausen's injury, Sharpley's strong play put QB position up in the air
Quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who suffered a left hip injury in Saturday's loss to Purdue, is uncertain for next weekend's game at UCLA.
"(Jimmy Clausen) didn't think it was going to be anything bad," Irish coach Charlie Weis said Sunday.
Evan Sharpley, who led the Irish on two scoring drives in the fourth quarter, put himself in the running for more playing time and potentially a start.
"I'd have to evaluate (Sharpley) as pretty good, (especially) due to the number of reps he got (in practice) in relation to Jimmy," Weis said. "I'd say he probably got about a quarter to a third of the reps."
According to Weis, Sharpley earned more than additional playing time.
"He's earned the respect of his players that we can win with him in there at quarterback," Weis said.
Asked if Jimmy Clausen would start against UCLA if he were healthy, Weis said: "That's probable. (But) to be fair to both Jimmy and Evan, I'm not ready to even worry about that issue at this point."
