If healthy, Clausen will play
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- If his injured hip is sound, Jimmy Clausen will be Notre Dame's starting quarterback Saturday at UCLA. It's just a matter of how big the "if" is.
"I'm not 100 percent sure what Jimmy is going to look like," Irish coach Charlie Weis said Tuesday. "He's supposed to be set and ready to go.
"Some guys are set and ready to go, and they don't play for another two weeks. Other guys that are set and ready to go, they're ready to go that day. I'm going to have to see visually on the field how it goes."
Still, there appears to be no controversy with Jimmy Clausen and junior Evan Sharpley. Jimmy Clausen threw for 169 yards and a touchdown last weekend at Purdue, and Sharpley relieved the freshman after his injury and threw for 208 yards and two scores.
Extra points
Leading receiver David Grimes has a right-ankle injury and is "50-50" for UCLA, Weis said. Guard Dan Wenger (left leg) is questionable, and defensive end Justin Brown (ankle) is probable, though Dwight Stephenson has moved ahead of Brown on the depth chart. Wenger and Brown were on the field for practice Tuesday. ... Eric Maust remains the punter, apparently taking the job from preseason All-American Geoff Price. ... After leaving the team last week while mulling a transfer, backup lineman Chris Stewart returned to practice Tuesday. ... Though he carried only five times against Purdue, James Aldridge has been elevated to No. 1 tailback on the depth chart.
