Dolphins football operations boss Bill Parcells sympathizes with old pal Charlie Weis, the head coach at Notre Dame.
Between the two of them, their teams are coming off a combined 4-24 season. Weis served on Parcells’ staffs with the Giants, Patriots and Jets.
“I have always thought Notre Dame was one of the more difficult jobs in the United States,”
Parcells recently told the Chicago Tribune.
“The competition is greater than it has ever been in college football. That makes it tough on everybody, particularly for a place that has such great tradition and a great history like Notre Dame.”
In a related note, former Dolphins back Bernie Parmalee, now the tight ends coach at Notre Dame, recently made a bold comment about the Fighting Irish’s upcoming season.
“I guarantee you (Irish fans) that you won’t be disappointed this season,”
Parmalee said in the Gary (Ind.) Post-Tribune. “Mark it down, we’re on a mission.”
Parmalee said last year “was hard on you but even harder on us, the staff and players. Sometimes you get spoiled. A young team, we went through the fire and hung together as a team. We played the most freshmen ever. Our young kids gained experience and had a great spring.”
In the Chicago Tribune story, Parcells also speaks of his friendships with another skipper trying to pull off a total franchise turnaround — Cubs manager Lou Piniella — and retired hoops coach Bob Knight.
“He’s my friend and I’m his friend,”
Parcells said of Knight, “and I’ll say this as a friend: ‘I’m someone who knows all about you and likes you anyway.’ That’s how I describe our relationship.”
